On August 24th, 1927, Mr. Hubert Broad flying the De Havilland D.H. 71 Tiger Moth broke the world's speed record over 100 km. (62.1 miles) for single seat Light Aeroplanes between 200 and 350 kg. (441 and 771 lb.) weight with a speed of 186.4 m.p.h. The Tiger Moth is a low wing monoplane very similar to the Supermarine S. 6. The machine was built round Mr. Broad and has a fuselage of extremely small section. The wing span is 19 ft. The engine was a special De Havilland of 32/130 h.p. and was the prototype of the D. H. Gipsy.
