The Dornier Do. 18 built by the Dornier Metallbauten G.m.b.H., was expressly designed for Trans-oceanic mail service and is notable for being the first commercial flying-boat fitted with heavy-oil engines. This type is being used for experimental work on the North Atlantic crossing to the United States. Fitted with two 500-560 h.p. Junkers "Jumo 205" compression-ignition engines, the Do. 18 has a cruising speed of 124 m.p.h. and a range of 2,765 miles.
