Hawker Hurricane Image 2
The Hawker "Hurricane" is the latest single-seat fighter in the R.A.F. In the brief time which it has been in service it has already distinguished itself by flying from Edinburgh to Northolt at an average speed of 408 m.p.h.—assisted by an 80 m.p.h. tail wind. Naturally, this does not count as a record, which is the average speed in two directions over a 3 km. course to counteract the wind. The "Hurricane" is powered by one Rolls-Royce "Merlin" II 12 cylinder liquid-cooled motor. It is an all-metal low-wing cantilever monoplane with retractable undercarriage. The single pilot sits in an enclosed cockpit with a very good view in every direction. Full performance figures for the "Hurricane" cannot be quoted.
