Supermarine S. 6
This Supermarine S. 6 machine, piloted by Lt. Off. H. R. D. Waghorn, won the 1929 Schneider Trophy Contest at Spithead at an average speed of 328.63 m.p.h. Later, piloted by Sq. Ldr. Orlebar, the S.6 captured the world's speed record over a 3 km. (1.86 miles) course at an average speed of 357.7 m.p.h. The engine is a Rolls-Royce "R" twelve-cylinder water cooled engine. The cooling water from the engine passes over both surfaces of the wing, which has a double skin of duralumin especially designed for the purpose. The machine is built entirely of duralumin. The petrol is carried in the floats.
