| The Supermarine
Company built the winning machines of the last three Schneider Trophy
Contests, and it is not surprising therefore, that the famous Spitfire,
eight-gun fighter should be claimed to be the fastest military aeroplane
in existence. It is certainly capable of speeds in excess of 360 m.p.h.
The very latest flush-riveted stressed skin principles are used in
the construction of the single-seater airframe, giving extraordinary
lightness and strength, and power is provided by the famous Rolls-Royce
Merlin engine of 990 h.p. |
